Tom Beauchamp

Tom L. Beauchamp (n. Austin , 1939 ) is a philosopher American specializes in moral philosophy , the bioethics and animal ethics . He is Professor of Philosophy at Georgetown University , and is Senior Research Fellow at the Kennedy University Ethics Institute . 1

Beauchamp is the author or co-author of several books on ethics and philosophy by David Hume , including Hume and the Problem of Causality (1981, with Alexander Rosenberg ), Principles of Biomedical Ethics (1985, with James F. Childress ), And The Human Use of Animals (1998, with Barbara F. Orlans et al). He is co-editor with RG Frey, of The Oxford Handbook of Animal Ethics (2011). Also the co-editor of Hume’s Complete Works, The Critical Edition of Works by David Hume (1999), published by Oxford University Press. 1


He earned a Bachelor of Divinity degree from Southern Methodist University in 1963, a Yale Divinity School Bachelor of Divinity , and a Ph.D. in philosophy from Johns Hopkins University in 1970. He is a member of the Hastings Center . 1


Beauchamp was part of the staff of the National Commission for the Protection of Human Subjects of Biomedical Research and Behavior, where he co-wrote the Belmont Report in 1978. He later joined with James Childress to write Principles of Biomedical Ethics (1985) First important textbook of American bioethics. Beauchamp is also an expert in the philosophy of David Hume. He is the co-publisher of Hume’s completed works published by Oxford University Press, and together with Alexander Rosenberg is the author of Hume and the problem of causality (1981), in which Hume’s theory is defended the regularity of the causality , along with a non skeptical of Hume’s arguments against induction interpretation.

He has also written extensively on animal rights , and has advocated a theory of animal rights that can significantly alter, but not decisively, the ways in which non-human animals are currently used. 2
