Abortion in Trinidad and Tobago

Currently abortion in Trinidad and Tobago is illegal except in cases of threat to the life or health of women. The penalty for a woman who has an abortion is up to four years in prison and the penalty for a doctor or other person performing the procedure is the same. A person who helps in the process of finding someone to perform the abortion or in other preliminary stages can be sentenced to prison for two years. 1

In Trinidad and Tobago , many people have a perception that most people disagree with abortion rights, but according to a 2007 study this is perhaps not the case. The study indicated that about half of Trinidad and Tobago’s population favored increased legal access to abortion. 2
