Abortion in Suriname

Currently abortion in Suriname is illegal except in cases of threat to the life or health of women. The penalty for a woman who has an abortion is up to three years in prison and the penalty for a doctor or other person performing the procedure is up to four years. 1

In 2007 , Surinam’s Minister of Health , Celsius Waterberg , launched a scandal when he criticized the legalization of euthanasia while promoting abortion in cases of rape or danger to the fetus. 2
