Abortion in Iran

The legal issue of abortion in Iran has been the subject of much controversy for many years. The currently it allows abortion in Iran only if the pregnancy threatens the woman’s life. Any other form of abortion is illegal. However, there is an extended violation of the law. 1

In 1978 abortion was legalized for the first time. 2 In April 2005 , the Iranian Parliament approved a new bill that would reduce the conditions for abortion in certain cases, for example if the pregnancy would result in the birth of a child with a congenital disease . However, the Guardian Council , a twelve-member body that must pass new legislation passed by Parliament, rejected the bill a month later. 3 4 5
