Abortion in Azerbaijan

The abortion in Azerbaijan was legalized the 23 of November of 1955 , while Azerbaijan was part of the Soviet Union as the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic . The current legislation dealing with abortion has never been changed, following in force after the collapse of the Soviet Union and the independence of Azerbaijan in 1991 . 1 The legislation is one of the most liberal laws on abortion in the world , allowing abortion on demand up to the 28th week of pregnancy for a variety of reasons. 1

The law allows abortion on request for reasons of injury or death to the fetus and / or mother and rape and incest , besides her husband’s death during pregnancy a judgment for the mother or father, an injunction that Deprives the mother of the rights of the parents if the house already had more than five children if the relationship between the mother and the father ends up in divorce or there is a family history that includes a mental illness or a motor deficiency . 1

Traditionally, abortion has been used as a contraceptive method in Azerbaijan. 1 In 2014 , 13.8% of pregnancies in Azerbaijan ended in abortion, an increase in the lowest percentage in 2005 (12.1%). 2
