Abortion in Armenia

The abortion in Armenia was legalized on November 23, 1955, while Armenia was part of the Soviet Union ; 1 current legislation dealing with abortion dates back to 2002. It allows the termination of pregnancy at the request of the mother until the twelfth week and for medical or social reasons until week twenty two with the approval of a physician. 2 traditionally been used abortion as a contraceptive method in Armenia, in February and the rate of maternal mortality because of complications with the abortion was very high (between 10% and 20% in 2000). 1 After major reforms, the number of deaths decreased to 5% in 2005. 1

In 2009, 23.2% of pregnancies in Armenia ended in abortion, an increase in the lowest percentage in 2004 (22.1%). 3
