Abortion in Albania

The abortion in Albania was completely legalized on 7 December 1995. 1 The abortion can be performed at the request of the mother until the twelfth week of pregnancy . 2 Women should undergo psychological counseling for one week prior to the procedure, and abortion hospitals can not disclose to the public which women have treated. 2

During the rule of Enver Hoxha , Albania had a natalist policy; 2 resulted in women performing the abortions illegally or inducing themselves. Eventually the country had the second highest maternal mortality rate in Europe, and it was estimated that 50% of pregnancies resulted in abortion. Women convicted of abortion were socially embarrassed by the Communist Party or sent to work on a re-education program. 2

In 1989 abortion was legalized in the case of rape and incest or if the patient was under 16 years of age. 2 In 1991 abortion by request was introduced, which allowed women to terminate their pregnancy for a variety of reasons if a board of doctors agreed that it was the best decision. 2 The 1995 law annuls all previous laws. 1
